The Senior Management Team has announced a directive stating that previously printed Course Readers will be provided to students free of charge via Learn as a PDF.
The reasons for the change are to:
- Reduce the cost of providing course related reading material to students.
- Provide students with greater accessibility to course related material.
- Eliminate the need for students to queue at Course Mart for purchasing printed Course Readers.
Terminology:
- Course Reading: A written article that a student is required to read that has been extracted from a published source.
- Course Reader: A collection of written articles (readings) that students are recommended to read.
- Lab manual, Tutorial and Study Guide: Course material specifically written by a lecturer(s) for the course into which students will write to record hypotheses, observations and outcomes and/or perform calculations or tasks that a lecturer may seek to review for purposes of assessment.
What the change means for staff:
- Course Readers will no longer be printed in advance of semester start (Course Mart room has been permanently closed).
- Lab Manuals, Tutorials and Study Guides etc will be exempt and may be printed in advance of semester start. http://intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/ceps/order_print.shtml Administrators will be responsible for determining total print numbers, which will be returned to departments once printed for distribution. Alternatively, these may be made available via Learn, to be accessed in the UC Course Reader block. http://intranet.canterbury.ac.nz/ceps/submit_readings.shtml
- Departments will no longer be internally charged for printing produced by CEPS (Canterbury Educational Printing Services) however, a departmental Oracle number and delivery address must be supplied for tracking purposes. The cost of printing will be recorded and this information will be provided to College Managers for use in determining future budgets.
What the change means for students:
- Students have more choices in the way they get their course material.
- All submitted content is able to be viewed within Learn as individual article PDFs free of charge. They can be downloaded to mobile devices such as iPads, smart phones or laptops (normal service provider download charges apply when downloading off campus).
- If students choose to print out copies they can print individual articles when required (via Learn) to workroom or lab printers. The price has been lowered from 7c per side to 5c per side.
- If a complete printed copy of all supplied readings is required, via Learn, a student may order a copy within their Learn course.
